Thank you to the 4000-5000 students, faculty, staff and community members who participated in Focus the Nation! Now that you've learned many different solutions to global climate change, make it happen. One thing you can do to combat global warming right now is to:

 

CHOOSE YOUR FUTURE! As a key part of Focus the Nation, students and citizens across the country will VOTE on five priorities for climate change action. Focus teams will deliver this campus and citizen endorsed agenda to congressional offices across the nation, on February 18th, when members of congress are back in their districts for the President's Day recess. Welcome to Cal Poly Focus the Nation!
 
On January 31st, 2008 Cal Poly will participate in the largest teach-in in America's history, Focus the Nation: Global Warming Solutions for America. This will be one of more than 1450 such events taking place at college campuses all over the country involving thousands of presenters and millions of students.
 
This day-long teach-in will be featuring presentations and panel discussions from a wide range of perspectives on climate change solutions including physics, biology, architecture, engineering, agriculture, business, economics, psychology and religious studies. The event will conclude with a non-partisan examination of the 2008 Presidential candidates' plans for solutions to climate change as well as students engaging with local, state, and federal representatives. Keynote speakers to include Congresswoman Lois Capps (via live webcast) and State Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee.

 

All events are open to the public free of charge!
 
In addition to these presentations, regularly scheduled classes will be incorporating assignments, lectures and discussions of climate change and global warming solutions from the perspectives of their particular disciplines.  Suggested curricular resources for instructors are provided here.

Monday, Jan 28th- Environmental Poetry Slam at 8pm in Chumash Auditorium! Sacramento based Noah Supanova Hayes will be the featured Slam poet. In addition there will be an open mic session for students to participate.

Tuesday, Jan 29th- Movie showing: Weather We Change in Bldg 3-213 (business silo) @ 8pm.  A skiing adventure documentary that follows athletes who have taken a pledge to follow in the footsteps of pro skier Alison Gannett in search of a greener ski bum lifestyle. Stunning footage of the Swiss Alps, California, Washington, and an educational journey come together in an unforgettable film that shows how global warming is an issue that skiers cannot afford ignore. Wednesday, Jan 30th- Live web cast: The 2% Solution in the PAC Pavillion (behind Phillips Hall) @ 5pm.  Join Stanford University climate scientist, Stephen Schneider, sustainability expert Hunter Lovins , green jobs pioneer Van Jones, actor Edward Norton, and youth climate leaders, for a discussion of global warming solutions. Focus News:

 

 

* Focus the Nation to host a Green Job Fair and Trade Show in UU220 on January 31st from 11-2pm. Bring your resume and talk to various green companies about jobs and internships in green architecture, alternative energy, sustainability engineering, as well as various non-profits. * Focus the Nation and Campus Dining partner to sell a special "Focus Lunch" on January 31st! The healthy, local, compostable box lunch will be for sale at various campus dining locations on Thursday.

 

*Focus the Nation partners with the Central Coast Clean Air Coalition (C5) to host an Alternative Fuel Vehicle Show on Mott Lawn from 10am - 2pm on January 31st. For a list of attending vehicles click here.

 

* Focus the Nation to host a Local Government Round-table during the "Strengthening the Political Will for Investment in Climate Change Solutions" event at 7pm in Chumash Aud. on Jan. 31st. Larry Allen, the Executive Director of Air Pollution Control District, will moderate a discussion among County Supervisors Jerry Lenthall & Jim Patterson, Paso Robles Mayor Frank Mecham, SLO City Councilwoman Christine Mulholland, as well as County Supervisor candidates Adam Hill (District 3) and Debbie Arnold (District 5) about local solutions to climate change.

 

* Blue Turtle Seduction to play at UU hour on January 31st! In addition they will be bringing their biodiesel tour bus and doing an educational workshop on biodiesel. For more info click here

 

* Focus the Nation Sustainability Art Exhibit in the UU Epicenter until Feb 1st.  For more information click here.

 

* On January 31st Cal Poly Facilites Services will "Power-down" for Focus the Nation. Roughly 500kW (the equivalent of 400-500 homes!) will be shed from all campus facilities to signify the effect our energy consumption has on global climate change.

 

* CLIF Bar CEO and Cal Poly Alumnus Gary Erickson have become national sponsors of Focus the Nation. To support the efforts of Focus the Nation CLIF Bar is donating special edition Focus the Nation CLIF Bars to Cal Poly. The first 40 attendees to each presentation in Chumash Auditorium will receive a free nutritious treat!
